Armed with a diverse musical background, Los Angeles based singer/songwriter
Zack Hexum has always been able to deliver his songs in a fresh way. It helps, of course, that Hexum has a rich-textured voice that matches the depth of his songwriting abilities. His sophisticated indie sound is influenced by his jazz background and combines his love of Americana with generational pop rock. Hexum has been influenced by a wide range of artists like Elliott Smith, Wilco, Jon Brion, Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell.

Hexum is a skilled performer on seven different instruments: saxophone, piano, guitar, bass, drums, bass clarinet and flute. His aptitude as a multi-instrumentalist has earned him the respect of musicians and producers

Hexum has recorded and performed with Brian Wilson, 311, Michael Buble, Jessie Baylin and Drake Bell. He has written songs with artists like Nicole Scherzinger, Nick Hexum, Blake Lewis, Brandon Rogers, Jessie Baylin and Drake Bell. Hexum has also appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn, has songs featured on Fox’s The O.C. and his acclaimed hit, “How Many Times” was featured as iTunes Single of the Week after catching the attention of music executives at Apple.

As a one-man band, Hexum utilizes his instrumental versatility and jazz composition background as he forays into movie and television scoring. He has written for Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101, Dan Eberle’s award-winning Jail City and James Ferguson’s Happy Holidays. He also helped compose the score for the full-length feature, Merry Christmas, Drake and Josh.

Touring has given Hexum a chance to connect with his loyal fan base and reach new converts. He has toured incessantly over the past five years, playing hundreds of shows throughout the United States. He has opened for 311, Tears of Fears, The Plain White T’s and Ryan Cabrera.

A graduate of University of North Texas and a three-year member of the famed One O’clock Lab Band, Hexum is celebrated for the aesthetic solidarity that characterizes his records. There is vulnerability and honesty that shines through his music and lyrics. His songs have a unique sound, but his albums are famously unified in theme and musicality. Hexum’s ability to weave together interesting stories and beautiful melodies into undeniably catchy and complex tunes is the appeal of his art.

Hexum’s debut, The Story So Far, was released in 2006 on What Have You Records and was produced by the award-winning knob-twirler Don Gehman (R.E.M., Bruce Hornsby, John Mellencamp, Pat Green). The songs on his second album, Open to Close, were demoed in hotel rooms and on a bus while touring around the country in the summer of 2007. The album, which consists of 12 songs, was released in 2007.

The songs on both albums are glimpses into Hexum’s memories and experiences and are intensified by his sole presence as producer, writer and performer on the record.

Currently, Hexum is writing and recording songs for his next album, slated for release in 2009.
